Pyrolysis technology has become a popular solution for converting waste materials—such as plastics, tires—into valuable products like fuel oil, carbon black, and combustible gas. However, a key question for project investors is whether waste should undergo pretreatment before entering the pyrolysis reactor or if it can be fed directly. The answer depends on the type of waste, the desired output, and the design of the pyrolysis system.
For waste materials
Moisture content is one important factor, wet materials require more energy to heat, increasing fuel consumption and reducing system efficiency. So for waste materials with high water content, we need to make pretreatment to remove the moisture, thus enhancing pyrolysis efficiency and saving heating energy.
The other factor is the purity of processed waste, if the waste materials include metal, stones, or other non-combustible materials, which will reduce the final product quality and damage the equipment, so remove these contaminants before pyrolysis is very important.
For equipment types
Now there are mainly two popular types of pyrolysis machines in the market: batch type and continuous design. Take Huayin pyrolysis machine as an example, the batch type equipment can process almost all kinds of waste, which adopts the 60-ton hydraulic feeding system for reactor feeding. So there is almost non requirements for the size of the recycled waste, and we can feed waste into pyrolysis reactor directly.
While for the continuous design pyrolysis machine, to ensure the continuous feeding, pyrolysis operation and discharging, it adopts the screw conveyor to feed the reactor. So we need to pretreat waste plastics into pellets, pretreat waste tires into rubber powder or blocks with a diameter of approximately 2-3 millimeters, ensuring the whole work efficiency.
In a word, whether need the pretreatment for waste depends on various factors. Pretreatment improves reactor performance, energy use, and product quality but adds upfront cost while directly feeding can reduce operational steps and expenses.
