As more industries explore sustainable recycling options, one common question arises: Can the same pyrolysis machine recycle tire plastic waste together?
The clear answer is no—processing tires and plastics together in a single pyrolysis batch is not recommended, as it can compromise both the efficiency and the quality of the final products. The following are two main reasons:
Different composition of tire and plastic waste
Waste tires and plastics have very different chemical compositions, making them unsuitable for joint pyrolysis processing. Tires contain rubber, carbon black, steel wires, and sulfur compounds, requiring higher temperatures and producing by-products like steel and more solid residue. Plastics such as PE, PP, and PS are petroleum-based polymers that decompose at lower temperatures and contain additives like dyes or flame retardants.
Different pyrolysis temperature of tire and plastic waste
Waste tires and plastics require different pyrolysis temperatures due to their unique material properties. Tires typically need higher temperatures, around 300–400°C, because of their dense rubber content and steel components. In contrast, plastics like PE, PP, and PS decompose effectively at lower temperatures, usually between 250–350°C. Processing both materials together can lead to incomplete pyrolysis or excessive energy use.
In summary, waste tire and plastic can’t be processed together in the same time, which will influence the work efficiency and final product quality of the recycling. But they can be recycled separately in the same pyrolysis machine in different batch.
