Pyrolysis plants are widely recognized for converting tire and plastic waste into valuable products like pyrolysis oil, carbon black, and steel wire. However, there’s often confusion about the other two key byproducts: exhaust gas and syn-gas. Can the syn gas produced during pyrolysis be recycled? And how about the exhaust gas? Lets have a brief learning:

What’s the Difference Between Exhaust Gas and Syn-Gas?
  1. Syn-gas (synthetic gas):

This is a primary product of the pyrolysis reaction. When tires or plastics are heated in an oxygen-free reactor, their long-chain polymers break down into smaller hydrocarbon molecules. A portion of these molecules remains in gaseous form (not condensed into oil) and is called syn-gas. It primarily consists of methane, hydrogen, and light hydrocarbons like ethane—making it a high-energy fuel source.

  1. Exhaust gas (flue gas):

This refers to the (flue gas) produced when syn-gas or other fuels are burned to heat the pyrolysis reactor. It contains byproducts of combustion, such as carbon dioxide, water vapor, and trace impurities. Unlike syn-gas, exhaust gas is not a recyclable fuel; it must be purified to remove pollutants before emission to meet environmental standards.

Can syn-gas and exhaust gas be recycled from tire plastic pyrolysis plant?

Of course, the syn-gas generated can be recycled as heating fuel to heat the pyrolysis reactor; and the exhaust gas will be discharged after purified with the exhaust gas emission control system. Then how to recycle the syn-gas from tire plastic pyrolysis plant?

Gas Collection

After pyrolysis, non-condensable gases are separated from the liquid oil using a cooling and condensation system.

Gas Cleaning

Before reuse, the gas passes through Exhaust Gas Emission Control System(includes components such as cyclones, scrubbers or filters) to remove impurities particular matter, and potentially harmful emissions from the gas steam, ensuring cleaner combustion and reduced emissions.

Energy Recovery

Once cleaned, the exhaust gas can be used as a fuel to heat the pyrolysis reactor itself, reducing the need for external energy sources such as coal, wood, or diesel.

Generally we can obtain about 10% syn-gas, therefore, environmentally friendly and effective recovery of syn gas can reduce a lot of costs for the operation of pyrolysis projects. At the same time, after purification, it can achieve 100% environmentally friendly recycling of the exhaust gas, truly realize the eco-friendly recycling of waste and avoid secondary pollution.
